How do I know which size bike to buy?
There are many elements that play into a bike fitting well. However, the most important element of bike fit is the measurement from the center of bottom of the bike frame to the top tube of the bike.

This is the size given on each bike information/order page. It is given in inches for Mountain/Hybrid bikes and in centimeters for Road bikes. Getting the right size is important, so read this before ordering. While it is possible to come up with some rough guidelines based on height, these are only an initial starting point for a proper fit consultation with us down at the Montclair Bikery. Each person’s physical dimensions and attributes (i.e. arm length, torso length, femur length, flexibility, etc.) are slightly different and can lead to different frame size needs even for people of the same height. The chart below can be used to find a starting point for you.
If you are in between two sizes it is often best to go with the smaller size. It is easier to make a smaller frame fit a little larger then it is to attempt the reverse. Fitting is an important process which directly affects the ride quality and comfort of a bike.

The same is true with kids’ bike sizing. While height is a good starting point it is no substitute having us view your child on a bike to determine what is the appropriate fit. This is especially important as kids’ skill levels can vary greatly. A child who is very skilled at riding a bike may be comfortable on a larger bike then a child of the same height who has just learned to ride without training wheels. The chart below can be used as a good starting point. Here the measurement refers to the size of the wheel, not the frame size.
